ONG Ranita de Darwin officially joins the Amphibian Survival Alliance (ASA): A major leap forward for amphibian conservation in Chile

We are delighted to announce that ONG Ranita de Darwin has officially joined the Amphibian Survival Alliance (ASA), the largest global partnership for amphibian conservation. This milestone not only consolidates over a decade of our organisation's work, but also connects Chile to the world's foremost global network for amphibian conservation.

What is the Amphibian Survival Alliance (ASA)?

The Amphibian Survival Alliance (ASA) is a global network of partners working to implement research and conservation measures for the world's amphibians. ASA promotes and coordinates the delivery of conservation action through an active, growing, committed and collaborative alliance.

ASA works alongside a global network of zoos, universities, NGOs, government agencies, foundations and community organisations working on the ground. Its partners run captive breeding programmes, protect critical habitats, conduct groundbreaking research, influence global amphibian conservation policy, train future leaders and inspire the next generation of conservationists. Together, they are proving that coordinated action works.

ASA's shared vision is clear: "To build a future where amphibians thrive in nature". To achieve this, it works in close collaboration with two key organisations: the IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group (ASG), which provides the scientific foundation to inform effective conservation; and Amphibian Ark, which leads ex situ solutions (outside the natural habitat) for species in critical circumstances.

Why is this partnership so important?

No other amphibian has such a distinctive parenting method as Darwin's frog (Rhinoderma darwinii). After its tadpoles hatch from the eggs, the male scoops them into his vocal sac and carries them there for several weeks, until fully formed froglets emerge, ready to live in the forest.

In Chile, our organisation — named after this remarkable frog — has been carrying out the same careful, protective work that Darwin's frog does, but on a much larger scale.

Who is ONG Ranita de Darwin?

Founded in 2015, ONG Ranita de Darwin is Chile's first non-profit organisation specifically dedicated to the conservation, research and dissemination of knowledge about Chile's amphibians and their habitats.

The mission of ONG Ranita de Darwin is to contribute to Chile's natural heritage by caring for the country's amphibians and its native forest through research and collaborative conservation with communities and institutions, with the purpose of protecting amphibians and ecosystems that are unique in the world.

To fulfil this aim, the organisation is guided by fundamental values: being collaborative, promoting multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral conservation that incorporates local and global stakeholders; being inspirational, generating positive change to build a sustainable future for amphibians, ecosystems and society; being principled, maintaining high ethical standards that ensure fair and respectful interactions with both people and animals; and being transparent, communicating in an open, honest and clear manner to strengthen trust within the team and with its alliances.
